CTA awards digital solutions at SARA in Abidjan

The Salon International de l’Agriculture et des Ressources Animales (SARA) – the international exhibition of agriculture and animal resources – is one of the biggest agricultural events in West Africa. The competition was open to young entrepreneurs aged between 21 and 40 years old. Nineteen start-ups were selected to take part in the final stage of the competition. All participants in the competition will be put forward for the Challenge of 1,000 which will be held at the 2020 Africa-France Summit in Bordeaux, France, on 4-6 June 2020. Algerian mobility startup temtem launches carpooling in North Africa with KAROS deal

Algerian mobility startup temtem is bringing car-pooling to the North Africa region via a partnership with French company Karos. Founded in 2017 by Kamel Haddar and backed to the tune of US$4 million in VC funding last year, temtem assists its 500,000 customers with its ride-sharing service. It is now rolling out a car-pooling service in partnership with Karos, the French leader in home-to-work car-pooling. The company is expanding internationally for the first time by teaming up with temtem. Japan’s Project NINJA Aims To Support 50 Pre-Seed/Seed-Stage Startups In Ethiopia & Others

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the agency that coordinates official development assistance for the Japanese government in developing countries, has announced the launch of a project aimed at strengthening startup ecosystems in emerging markets. NINJA, as the project is called, is short for Next Innovation with Japan. It is a startup support project that will be developed and implemented in about 5 pilot countries, including Ethiopia. Project NINJA will be focused on propping up innovative startups through business competition and incubation/acceleration programs in the targeted countries, as well as business matching support and policy advocation. Egyptian startup Garment IO has landed $450 000 in seed funding from Egypt Ventures and 500 Startups via its 500 Falcons fund. Cote D’Ivoire startup Afrikrea lands €1m investment

Ivorian tech startup Afrikrea has secured €1-million in investment from its existing investor Saviu, a French venture builder and venture capital (VC) fund, as well as French angel fund Id4 Ventures. This, according to an article last week by Jeune Afrique, a French-language pan-African publication. Afrikrea claims to be the leading “Made of Africa” fashion, art and handicraft online marketplace. The marketplace has processed more than $4-million in sales across 101 countries and supports merchants from all over the world. African Fintech Startup JUMO Closes Biggest Round Of 2020 So Far With Fresh $55Million

South African-born fintech startup, JUMO, has secured USD 55 Mn in its latest funding round. More than one year after causing quakes with a USD 52 Mn funding round and then following that up with an additional USD 12.5 Mn just three months later, JUMO has announced the closure of another massive funding round. Sokowatch, a Kenya-based e-commerce startup, has raised $14 million Series A funding, to revamp its supply-chain market for informal retailers in Africa. Quona Capital led the financing round joined by Amplo, Breyer Capital, Vertex Ventures, Timon Capital, and 4DX Ventures. The B2B company directly connects merchants to local and multinational suppliers, as well as digitizes orders, payments, and logistics. Above the demand and supply chain, Sokowatch also leverages historical purchasing data of retailers to provide credit and other financial services.
